On almost every occasion wherein there is a cause for celebration like an anniversary, a birthday, a promotion, a gala, etc., a bottle of champagne is always at the heart of the party. This is because we have already associated this bubbly wine as the drink of celebration and of refined merriment that a champagne gift to the guests of honour is always a well-received present.

Now where did this all start and how did champagne and champagne gifts become associated with luxury and celebration?

Champagne is a sparkling wine that got its name from the region in France from whence it came from. Though popular belief dictates that a French monk by the name of Dom Perignon was responsible for the creation of champagne, it is actually another Frenchman by the name of Christopher Merret who came up with the method of making champagne known as methode champenoise 40 years before Dom Perignon’s claim. In the said method, sugar is added to allow for a second fermentation thus inducing more pressure inside the bottle that allows for the creation of tiny bubbles once the wine gets out. Dom Perignon, though no longer the “creator” of champagne, still made significant contributions to the process like the wire collar that allowed the cork to withstand the extreme pressure of the wine.

Nonetheless, champagne really got notice when it was labelled as the drink of royalty and luxury yet still affordable even for the middle class patrons. More so, its maker’s marketing ploy of targeting women and occasions special to them such as baptisms, birthdays, Valentine’s and the like made for champagne gifts to be quite popular even today.

Nowadays, champagne and champagne gifts still retain much of their reason for being. They are still viewed as luxurious, celebratory, and definitely reserved for fun occasions in a person’s life. Being given a champagne gift is tantamount to getting a wish of good luck and cheers from the giver. Thus, should you receive one, make sure you do the same for another.
